Introduction

Its Friday, December 26 and my family and I are driving along Interstate 10 through New Mexico between Deming and Las Cruces. Looking south at the West Potrillo Mountains we see snow on the mountains. What a perfect time to start the trans-Potrillo trip that has been loosely scheduled for sometime during the Christmas break. With snow to melt consideration of water sources - the greatest limitation to desert backpacking - disappears. Desert mountains are spectacular when snow covered. Saturday is spent packing and getting ready to go on the trip.
